Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, Robert Boshaw grew up listening to the popular country music and 50’s rock and roll that his parents loved. At the age of 14, his first guitar lessons were given to him for free by Juno nominee Rick Fines, and Robert has been spending his life since then returning the favour to his own students. Robert majored in Jazz Guitar Performance at Humber College in Toronto from 1987-89 where he studied with some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians. After leaving Humber he continued to study privately with guitarists Lorne Lofsky and the late Peter Harris, and also with the late pianist Bob Erlendson.
Robert returned to Peterborough in 1991, and quickly developed a thriving teaching practice. He helped form The Blueshounds. They were a power trio who wore several hats, often appearing as a polished blues act, playing jazz as The Eve Simmons Quartet, and they were the first call rhythm section for hire for various singer/songwriters travelling through town, notably the Austin blues guitarist, Sonny Rhodes.
Robert made the cross-country drive to British Columbia in August 2006 and settled in Vancouver. He held the guitar chair with the Central City Jazz Band from 2006 to 2012, and later switched to bass.
Robert first picked up a bass in 2007 to back up Vancouver singer/songwriter, Gina Williams, and he has been helping her deliver the funk ever since. Robert held down the bottom end for the Vancouver rock group, SwaggerJack from 2011 to 2014, writing and recording two albums with them.
Robert performs regularly with Richard Lowy. His current projects include backing up several Vancouver singer/songwriters, recording original music in his home studio near Granville Island, and facilitating home-based music nights for friends.
